Do not use specific information given like fuel flow, landing/take-off distances for your flights. Always refer to the POH of your exact plane for flight preparation. My information is just for references that I used.
Lesson 1.11 – Progress test 1 Dates: 20-07-2026 & 04-08-2026
Progress test 1 (20-07-2026)
Another lesson today after again one cancelled lesson because of the weather. Flying with 34 degrees celcius was not what we wanted. Haha.
Today we had around 20 degrees celcius, with a 8 knots wind from the north (variable between 280 and 040) and a sky full of cumulus clouds, starting at 2800 feet AGL. A great day for some VFR flying with no significant weather or other risks.
So today we will do the progress test for phase one. A lesson of one hour to perform every exercise done in phase one:
- Steep turns with 45 degrees bank angle
- Stalls in clean, approach and landing configuration
- Climbing and descending turns
- Two circuits
- Landing the plane with some crosswind (~8 knots)
Homework
I got some homework for the next lesson, which will also be a progress test but then a final test for both the exercises above and the circuits.
Progress test 1 (04-08-2026)
Today we had another progress test 1 lesson to actually put the cherry onto the pie like we say in Dutch. It was a very warm day today with a stunning 34 degrees celcius. The sky was very blue with some cirrus and cirrostratus clouds, but as they are very high level clouds no reason to not fly.
Because of this temperature, we have to add up 2400ft to our density altitude. At sea level, this is not a problem but this can be a problem if flying from a high-elevation field like Courchevel in France.
This weather gives us worse climbing performance because of the less amount of air particles and a longer take-off run needed, but when flying, our TAS and ground speed will be higher because there is less air to fight with (less dense, warm air expands).
We did the following excercises during this flight:
- Steep turns with 45 degrees bank angle
- Stalls in clean, approach and landing configuration and also a descending turn stall in approach configuration to simulate the turn from base to final
- Climbing and descending turns
- Trimming and staying level
- Four circuits
- Landing the plane with some crosswind (~5 knots)
The final two landings went good but because of the crosswind somewhat traversing. All with all a great lesson with some progress and I now have passed the 20 flight hour mark and 65 landings which is a great setup for phase 2.
Remarks
As always, I have some remarks for the next lessons and flights:
- More flying on visuals and nose attitudes
- Better coorperation between rudder and ailerons during landings, especially in crosswind
